USGA Selects Gold Mountain Again!
World’s best juniors to come in 2011
BREMERTON, Wash. – In further evidence that Gold Mountain Golf Club is a worthy venue for the finest golfers in the world and that it knows how to put on a national championship, the USGA is set to return to Bremerton in 2011.
In the USGA’s first championship at Gold Mountain, it was the finest public links players in the country, and beyond, who tested the 7,152-yard Olympic Course. Now, it will be the top juniors from around the world for the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur, set for July 18-23.
“We are very pleased to be hosting our second USGA national championship at Gold Mountain,” said Frank Horton, the tournament chairman, as he was in 2006 for the U.S. Amateur Public Links. “It’s a great honor to be selected by the USGA, an indication of the terrific job done by our committee, staff, grounds crew, volunteers and community for the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.”
The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship drew impressive crowds and golf fans from around the Puget Sound saw Casey Watabu post a 4-and-3 victory in the final over Anthony Kim, now a top player on the PGA Tour and a Ryder Cup star last fall.
“It’s a very special community feel to host the U.S. Junior Amateur,” said Scott Alexander, the director of golf at the City of Bremerton 36-hole facility. “Bremerton is a small community, so when something like this comes to our town, people get very involved.”
More than just the USGA has been coming to Gold Mountain. Top collegiate players have been tested by the Olympic Course, designed by John Harbottle III, every year in the Husky Invitational. The NCAA West Regionals were conducted there last spring and, in conjunction with the University of Washington, Gold Mountain has applied to be the host for the NCAA Championships.
First, though, would be the U.S. Junior Amateur.
“We are gearing up now for the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur, and can’t wait to blow their socks off again with our great course, enthusiastic volunteers, committee patrons, and incredible community support,” Horton said.
